In collaboration with community-based organizations, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology leads initiatives in medical education and community health education designed to support positive health outcomes in the Washington Heights community.

Medical Education

All residents in the Department of Ob/Gyn and some medical students completing clerkships in Ob/Gyn follow a curriculum focused on health justice and equity. This curriculum aims to recognize and address health injustices that impact our patient population and foster relationships with community-based resources that serve these patients.

Community Health Education

We believe that education is power. Our faculty members and trainees regularly offer health education presentations in partnership with community-based organizations.

We have also led and participated in media campaigns, including the New York state public health campaign, Kaiser Family Foundation, Hip Hop Public Health, and presentations on Spanish-language television. In 2023, the department launched Keep the Beat, a successful health education campaign which aimed to educate about the risk of heart disease after preeclampsia and gestational diabetes in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

For our community-based care teams working in the Ambulatory Care Network, we have a regular newsletter that shares community resources that may benefit their patients.
