Women's Genetics
Division Chief
Women’s Genetics at Columbia, led by Dr. Ronald Wapner, is dedicated to genetic concerns throughout a woman’s lifespan, relating to conception, pregnancy management, and women’s health. In partnership with Columbia University Fertility Center, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Family Planning, and our Gynecologic Oncology services, including the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program, we evaluate, educate, and support women, their partners, and their family members who are seeking genetic consultation for pregnancy planning, infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, fetal anomalies, prenatal genetic testing, and a family or personal history of breast, ovarian, and other gynecologic cancers.
Members of Women’s Genetics at Columbia have been at the forefront of discovery and implementation of reproductive genetic technologies for women and their pregnancies. Many of these studies have appeared in leading medical journals, changing obstetrical care and genetics practice. Our reproductive genetic counselors and Dr. Wapner are board certified in genetics. In addition, Dr. Wapner is board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Our close collaborations with the molecular and cytogenomic laboratories of New York Presbyterian Hospital, the Department of Pathology, and the Institute for Genomic Medicine offer our patients a distinct advantage providing a multidisciplinary team approach to understanding and interpreting complex genetic test results in a time-sensitive, patient-centered care environment. In line with our holistic approach to women’s healthcare is our relationship with Women’s Mental Health @ Ob/Gyn which provides therapeutic counseling to women and their partners experiencing a genetic diagnosis. With these important collaborations, we provide a comprehensive cutting edge approach to the integration of genetic tools into women’s healthcare.
