Clubfoot
What is clubfoot?
Clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) occurs when there are abnormal bones or tight ligaments in the foot, which causes the foot (or feet) to be pointed downwards or turned inwards. Clubfoot occurs in approximately one in 1,000 live births, with about half of all cases being bilateral (both feet involved).
How is this condition managed during pregnancy?
During the pregnancy routine ultrasounds and a fetal echocardiogram are performed. Genetic counseling is recommended, since clubfeet are usually associated with additional abnormalities and genetic conditions. Your prenatal care will be managed by a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, an obstetrician with special training and expertise in high risk pregnancies.
How is this condition managed after delivery?
Long term prognosis for isolated clubfoot/clubfeet is good and correction can be achieved with manipulation and surgery in the majority of cases.
