The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at Sloane Hospital for Women at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center is an exciting, fast-paced program which provides trainees with a wealth of clinical experience and exposure to all facets of our wide-ranging and rewarding specialty. During the course of their training, our house officers gain experience in managing virtually all of the problems that could confront a practitioner in our discipline.
Residents in Columbia's Ob/Gyn program enjoy challenging and rigorous clinical and research curricula, as well as a close-knit community of friends and colleagues among the residents and the department at large.
"I knew before my interview that Columbia was a fantastic program that provides excellent clinical training, strong mentorship, abundant research opportunities, and prepares residents extremely well for careers in all disciplines of OB/GYN," said Alexis Panzer, incoming PGY-1. "It was my interactions with residents, faculty, and staff during my interview experience however that made me choose Columbia. At the pre-interview dinner, it was very easy to see how close-knit the resident family was, how supportive of one another the residents were, and how much they enjoy working together. My interview day only solidified what I felt at the dinner, as the faculty and staff I interacted with were so welcoming of the applicants and passionate about the program, as well as Columbia. After that day, I knew that Columbia was the right place for me, and I am extremely excited to join the family soon!"
Columbia’s residency program accepts six new residents each year. In 2016, we received more than 800 applications for the Class of 2021. Columbia’s Ob/Gyn residency program is ranked #1 in New York State by Doximity’s Residency Navigator, and #11 in the nation.
"Everyone I met on my interview day spoke with passion, dedication, and joy about the work that they do," said Clara Bertozzi-Villa, incoming PGY-1. "The residents, faculty, and department leaders are committed to education and training in a setting that prioritizes excellence in patient care. I wanted to be part of a network of physicians that value each other as colleagues and friends, and I could not be happier with my decision."
Approximately 17,740 U.S. medical students learned the results at the same time on March 16, thanks to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), also known as The Match. At Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, 156 students participated in the Match. The most popular residencies were internal medicine (34 students), psychiatry (17), pediatrics (10), emergency medicine (9), obstetrics and gynecology (9), orthopedic surgery (9), dermatology (8), and neurology (8). Thirty-five percent of P&S students will do all or part of their residency in New York City.
